The forest is very dry because of the climate.

Any careless spark can ignite dry brush or chapparal. The fires that roared through San Diego county were caused by a variety of different kinds of sparks: electric wires whipping in high winds creating a spark that ignited dry brush, a hunter setting off a flare when he was lost, a migrant worker lighting a fire in a canyon to keep warm, and the most recent was a homeowner using a gas powered trimmer to clear for fire that sparked and ignited dry grass into a brush fire. Where I live in CA, we have a lot of dry brush, grass and chapparal that has accumulated over many decades and all it takes is a spark to create a firestorm.

A dry forest is extremely flamable. It's dry nature has no moisture and no way of combatting a fire. It burns in the same way in which wood would. With the none existance of moisture it will catch fire in no time.

A normal forest with regular rain fall can protect its self much better with the presence of moisture in the earch and undergrowth.

The highlight here is 'careless'. It means anything done without awareness can result in unintended catastrophe. Any match struck in a forest may not cause a forest fire, because the one who has lighted the match is aware of its need and its consequences if left unattended.

It can start very small. Somebody drops a match on the grass and the grass burns. soon, the flames reach a tree, The tree ignites, and eventually it reaches another tree. If nobody is around, a major fire is in progress before long.

its because if the forest is really dry in places where it is hot and they have little rain, then the fire is able to spread more quickly, an example is the fire in Greece last week.

Theres is an endless amount of fuel on the ground, like leaves and branches.. and trees of course. And in places like California, everything is very dry.
